Michael Konrad is used to working with materials typically found in the construction and demolition waste stream. In his past projects you will find anything from tyvec sleeping bags to bunkers constructed out of pallets and traffic cones. But you’ll also find well crafted, finely tuned objects, with close attention paid to the objects they are made from. So for Michael, the real challenge at RAIR was deciding how to dig into the wide variety of things to choose from. He made several visits, collected many different materials, and made a slew of preliminary sketches. However, all of that planning fell to the wayside when it came time to construct his sculpture. To his surprise, working in the yard lent itself to build more in the moment, allowing each move to inform the next. This experience, along with the ability to walk away from a large project with only photographic documentation will undoubtedly influence his future works.
