Artist Interview
During his time at RAIR, Narendra continued his exploration of mealworm beetles and their ability to metabolize and decompose Styrofoam. Using the superfund meadow in the back of RAIR, Narendra collected styrofoam that had blown away from the recycling piles to create an active environment for the mealworms to begin the styrofoam breakdown process. Narendra first carved the styrofoam pieces into a life size representation of a small portion of the superfund site and exhibited it at Asian Arts Initiative along with 5000 mealworms. During the 5 month duration of the show the mealworms slowly broke down the styrofoam and also transformed into darkling beetles.
Narendra also hosted a series of workshops “for a planet in crisis” that invited people to explore intimacy with nature, material waste culutre, and bio-recycling at the superfund located in the back of recycling center.
