Going to RAIR gave me a deeper, more profound understanding of what we’re getting rid of. There’s work that needs to be done to let people know that when you put something in a recycling can and put it on your sidewalk, it doesn’t just disappear from the world.

Shelley Spector sourced materials, variety of plastic materials selected for their color and function, to fabricate a modular workstation for her project “Bottle Soap”. Spector uses waste oil to produce small batched of liquid soaps. The entirely self contained modular workstation she built allows her to easily travel this project to remote areas for demonstrations etc. Spector typically uses organic materials in her work, like fabric or wood. The shift to using plastics was a surprisingly new for her practice. Her experience at RAIR reinforced her convictions about waste and consumption and affirmed the direction of her new works.
